WAPDA had suspended power supply to Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC), after approval of the federal government due to the arrears worth Rs 35 billion here today on 06 March 2008.

An official at KESE said. “At around 8:00 PST, WAPDA cut its 300 MW supplies to us and as a result the entire system tripped,” said Syed Sultan Hasan, spokesman for Karachi Electric Supply Co. which supplies power to Karachi. “KESC owes Rs34.8 billion to us and we have been writing to them every week to make at least some payment,” said WAPDA spokesman, Tahir Basharat Cheema. “Let alone making payments, they’re not even replying to our letters,” he said. However, Cheema said partial supplies had now been restored. Officials said a prolonged breakdown could cause major disruptions.
